History of International Flap Dissection Courses in Brno:
Flap dissection courses organized within the Department of Plastic and Aesthetic Surgery, St. Anne's University Hospital in Brno have a long tradition and are among the oldest of their kind worldwide.
The history of the courses dates back to 1985 when Dr. Lorenzo Gabetta from Milan visited our department. He assessed the research and education potential of the department and recommended establishing cooperation with the Instituto Nazionale per la Ricerca sul Cancro in Genoa. In 1986, Dr. Pietro Berrino visited us from the mentioned Italian institute and together we started to study the anatomy of the rectus abdominis muscles on cadavers at the St. Anne's University Hospital, with the significant support of Prof. Ladislav Bařinka, the Head of our Department at the time.
It was Dr. Pietro Berrino who initiated the idea of international courses. In 1986 and in the spring of 1987, together with the medical team of Prof. Pierluigi Santi, we prepared photo documentation and videos of the dissection of the head, neck, trunk, and limb flaps. The preparatory team included Dr. Jiří Veselý and Dr. Luboš Dražan from our department. The first course in English was organized in the autumn of 1987 with the participation and support of two leading representatives of Italian plastic surgery, Prof. Giovanni Micali from Catania and Prof. Nicoló Scuderi from Rome.
Between 1988 and 1997, these courses were held internationally on a regular basis twice a year. Most of the participants were from Italy, but many doctors from Germany and Sweden also attended. Three more courses followed in the years 2001, 2002 and 2003. These courses were attended by more than 200 participants. Other participants in the courses included Dr. Giovanni Botti, Dr. Marco Kllinger, Dr. Riccardo Cipriani, Dr. Corrado Rubino and others.
In 2021, we continued these traditional courses in the modern premises of the Department of Anatomy, Faculty of Medicine of Masaryk University, with the participation of our distinguished foreign guests, Dr. Pietro Berrino and Prof. JP Hong from South Korea.
